By utilizing a IV-V-vi-I progression, Dominic Fike avoids a traditional V-I authentic cadence, instead opting for a 'rising' feel (IV-V-vi) that is softly resolved by the jump to the tonic (I). Because the song is only 98 seconds long and never departs from this loop, the harmony functions more as a rhythmic texture than a narrative arc, which is characteristic of the 'Demos' EP's unpolished, immediate style. The use of the major key (F#) contrasts with the somewhat melancholic lyrics regarding his family history, a common trope in alternative pop.

The song was written and recorded while Dominic Fike was under house arrest in Florida in 2017. It was part of a small collection of demos that he uploaded to SoundCloud, which subsequently sparked a massive $4 million bidding war among major record labels while Fike was serving a jail sentence for violating his house arrest.
