The defining characteristic of 'Sweater Weather' is its use of the iii chord (Cm) within a standard pop loop. By substituting the common IV chord (Db) for the iii chord, the progression loses the 'uplift' of subdominant harmony and instead takes on a more melancholic, somber tone. This 'iii-V' ending to the progression creates a weak cadence that allows the song to loop seamlessly, reinforcing the atmospheric, 'chill' nature of the track.

The song was one of the very first tracks the band wrote together. It began with a guitar riff composed by guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels. Jesse Rutherford then wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies, marking a foundational moment in the band's signature 'dark-pop' sound.
