The use of the major V (F# major) instead of the natural minor v creates the harmonic minor dominant pull that defined 1970s disco. What makes this song harmonically distinctive is not the chords themselves but how the production — particularly the MIDI funk bassline and syncopated rhythm — transforms a basic progression into something that feels far more sophisticated. The harmonic restraint allows the groove and vocal performance to dominate, a hallmark of the best disco and nu-disco productions.

The song originated when Joe Kentish, A&R head at Warner Records, challenged producer Ian Kirkpatrick in late 2018 to recreate the success of Dua Lipa's breakthrough hit "New Rules." The first writing session took place after Emily Warren invited Caroline Ailin and Kirkpatrick to her home in Wyoming, where they attended a disco night at a local dive bar featuring classics like Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." Inspired by that evening, the trio began writing a disco song the next morning. The initial concept drew from Ailin's feelings of responsibility toward her ex-partner following their breakup. Kirkpatrick collaborated with producer J Kash and invited additional writers, creating more than ten reference tracks that oscillated between 1980s pop and disco. Dua Lipa joined the final co-writing session in January 2019, and together the four writers shaped the song into its finished form.

Released as the lead single from Future Nostalgia in October 2019, "Don't Start Now" helped ignite a mainstream disco revival with its infectious funk bassline and handclap-driven production. Written by the same team behind "New Rules," the song earned three Grammy nominations and peaked at number two on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart, cementing Dua Lipa as one of pop's most commanding voices.
