Galway Girl

The harmony of 'Galway Girl' is deliberately simple — a single four-chord loop in F# natural minor that repeats throughout the entire song without modulation or variation. What makes it distinctive is not the chord progression itself (which is one of the most common in pop) but how the traditional Irish instrumentation — fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrán — overlays Celtic melodic patterns and ornaments atop the static harmony. The cut-time feel at 100 BPM gives the song a driving, dance-like energy reminiscent of Irish reels, while the absence of a dominant V chord (C# or C#7) keeps the tonality modal and folk-flavored rather than classically tonal.

Sheeran wrote 'Galway Girl' during a recording session at his home in Suffolk, England, with Irish folk band Beoga, who had been invited to collaborate on several tracks for ÷. After finishing another song together, they had free time and decided to write one more. Beoga tried adding parts to a new idea but struggled to find the right direction until Sheeran suggested they try the riff from their instrumental 'Minute 5' (from their 2011 album How to Tune a Fish), which fit perfectly and became the song's signature hook.

Released as the third single from ÷ on Saint Patrick's Day 2017, 'Galway Girl' merges Ed Sheeran's pop instincts with the fiddle, bodhrán, and tin whistle of Irish folk band Beoga. The track topped charts in four countries and was certified Platinum in thirteen, proving that traditional Irish sounds could thrive in mainstream pop.
