Amy Lee wrote 'Going Under' about the experience of recognizing that a damaging relationship had to end. She described the feeling as being 'at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change.' After finishing the Fallen sessions, Lee listened back to the chorus and felt she wished she had pushed further into defiance — that the lyric should have said 'I'm leaving and I'm not going to put up with this anymore' — but at the time the song represented the most honest she had ever been lyrically. She originally wanted it to serve as Fallen's lead single. Ben Moody and David Hodges share songwriting credits with Lee.
