The song was written collectively by all four Followill brothers — Caleb, Nathan, Jared, and Matthew. The melody came first, with placeholder lyrics fitted to its vocal flow. According to drummer Nathan Followill, the working title was 'Set Us on Fire,' but a sound mixer walked in during a playback session and casually remarked, 'Sex on Fire, huh?' The misheard title became a running joke in the studio and eventually stuck as the official name. Other rejected lyric attempts included 'Socks on Fire,' 'Snatch on Fire,' and 'Cocks on Fire.'

Released in 2008 as the lead single from Only by the Night, 'Sex on Fire' transformed Kings of Leon from Southern garage-rock cult favorites into arena-rock superstars. Built on a driving E major riff and Caleb Followill's raspy, urgent vocals, the song topped charts in four countries and won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance.
