Brandon Flowers wrote the lyrics after discovering his girlfriend was cheating on him at the Crown and Anchor bar in Las Vegas. Guitarist Dave Keuning had already composed the music before meeting Flowers. The song famously features only one verse; Flowers noted that because he didn't have any other lines at the time of the demo, the single verse ended up sticking for the final version.
