Dazed and Confused

Rather than functional chord changes, the song's harmony is driven by chromatic bass motion beneath a static E minor center — a modular dirge structure inherited from Jake Holmes' 1967 original. This linear, riff-based approach to minor-key harmony, combined with blues-derived phrasing, became a template for the heavier rock that followed.

Jake Holmes wrote "Dazed and Confused" in 1967 and recorded it in a folk rock style for his debut solo album, released on the Tower Records label. In August 1967, Holmes opened for the Yardbirds at a Greenwich Village gig in New York; after hearing the song, the Yardbirds reworked it with a new arrangement and it became a centerpiece of their tours. In 1968 Jimmy Page's new group, Led Zeppelin, recorded it with new lyrics and a new vocal line for their debut album.

"Dazed and Confused" appeared on Led Zeppelin's 1969 debut album and quickly became a concert staple for much of the band's career. Originally written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Jake Holmes in 1967, it was reworked live by the Yardbirds before Jimmy Page's new band recorded it with new lyrics and vocal line. Its dark, dirge-like descending riff and extended live improvisations made it one of the defining tracks of early heavy rock.
