Madonna and William Orbit wrote and produced 'Beautiful Stranger' in 1999 for the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack. Guy Oseary — co-owner of Madonna's Maverick Records and an executive producer on the soundtrack alongside Warner Bros. Records SVP Danny Bramson — chose the track as the first single. Competition for placement on the album was fierce; one manager connected to the project described the fight for the lead single spot as 'a blood bath.' The producers ultimately selected Madonna's song because it fit the film's predominant 1960s pop mood.

It topped charts in Canada, Finland, Iceland, and Italy while reaching number one on the US dance charts without a commercial US single release.
