Crazy for You

The harmony of 'Crazy for You' is elegant in its simplicity. Built almost entirely from diatonic chords in Eb major with tasteful seventh extensions, the progression supports the torch-ballad vocal without ever competing for attention. The movement from vi to IV to V in the verse creates a quintessential 80s ballad feel, while the iii7 chord in the chorus adds just enough harmonic color to distinguish it from a purely formulaic structure.

Joel Sill, Warner Bros. Pictures music vice president, contacted lyricist John Bettis to write new material for the film Vision Quest. After reading the script, Bettis and his co-writer Jon Lind crafted 'Crazy for You' specifically for a scene in which the main characters, played by Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino, dance together for the first time. It was Lind who came up with the title, singing it over a section of the melody as they worked.

Written by John Bettis and Jon Lind for the 1985 film Vision Quest, 'Crazy for You' showcased a softer, more vulnerable side of Madonna at the height of her dance-pop dominance. Produced by John 'Jellybean' Benitez, this torch-influenced ballad topped charts worldwide and earned Madonna her first Grammy nomination, cementing her versatility as an artist beyond the club floor.
