Jackson deliberately kept the harmony simple — four chords in natural minor, cycling without resolution — so the melody could travel across language barriers. The emotional escalation comes entirely from production: sparse piano and strings in the opening, full orchestra and a 40-plus-voice gospel choir by the climax. The choice to avoid a leading-tone dominant pushes the song into Aeolian/gospel modal territory, which suits the quasi-religious imagery of the lyric.

Jackson wrote 'Earth Song' on June 1, 1988, at the Vienna Marriott hotel while on the Bad World Tour. He aimed for a lyric dense with emotional weight but a melody simple enough that audiences worldwide, including non-English speakers, could follow it. The song sat unreleased for seven years before appearing on HIStory.

Released in November 1995 as the third single from HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, 'Earth Song' was Jackson's most direct reckoning with environmental destruction and animal welfare. Built on a gospel foundation with sweeping orchestral production and a climactic call-and-response with Andraé Crouch's Choir, it topped the charts in six countries.
