Heal the World

"Heal the World" operates on simple diatonic harmony that prioritizes emotional access over complexity. Its defining structural move is three consecutive upward key modulations — rather than harmonic sophistication, tonal brightness escalates to generate the emotional arc. The IV–I plagal cadence that runs through the verses and chorus gives the song a gospel-hymn quality appropriate to its quasi-religious message. The chord vocabulary itself asks nothing of a beginner guitarist or pianist.

Jackson wrote "Heal the World" during the Dangerous sessions, drawing on his antiwar convictions and his wish for humanity to do better by children. He later told fans in a 2001 internet chat that it was the song he was most proud to have created. In the documentary Living with Michael Jackson, he said he composed it in his "Giving Tree" — a large tree at Neverland Ranch where he retreated to write.

"Heal the World" is the most overtly philanthropic track on Dangerous — a layered orchestral pop ballad that builds from hushed verses to a full choir finale through three consecutive key modulations. Released as the sixth single from the album in November 1992, it became inseparable from Jackson's public identity as a children's advocate and prompted him to found the Heal the World Foundation. The song closed his 2009 memorial service at the Staples Center.
