R. Kelly wrote 'You Are Not Alone' after experiencing personal loss, then forwarded a demo tape to Michael Jackson. On that recording, Kelly sang the song mimicking Jackson's own vocal style — Jackson found the impression amusing rather than presumptuous. Jackson had contacted Kelly asking whether he had any material available, and the demo sealed the collaboration. Jackson listened to it twice before committing, and insisted that production be a joint effort rather than a simple buy-out.
