Three major chords, no minor vi, no borrowed harmony — 'Some Might Say' is harmonically blunter than most of its Britpop contemporaries, and that directness is a deliberate feature. Gallagher understood that melodic weight and sheer production volume do more work than chord variety in this idiom. The absence of the expected vi chord gives the song a slightly harder, less wistful character than 'Wonderwall' or 'Don't Look Back in Anger', both of which lean on minor-chord colour for emotional texture.

Noel Gallagher wrote 'Some Might Say' as the earliest track for what would become (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. In July 1994, during sessions for the 'Whatever' single at Maison Rouge Studios, the band cut a demo that ran to 6:33 — nearly a minute longer than the finished record. In a 2016 interview, Gallagher said he preferred that version, calling it 'dirtier and sleazier' than the final, more polished Britpop take.

Released on 24 April 1995 as the lead single from (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, 'Some Might Say' gave Oasis their first chart-topper in the UK, debuting at number one and displacing Take That's 'Back for Good'. Written by Noel Gallagher and co-produced with Owen Morris, the track runs on swaggering guitar riffs, Liam's rawboned delivery, and an anthemic chorus that defined the peak years of Britpop. It also marks the end of an era: drummer Tony McCarroll was fired one week after its release, making this the last Oasis single to feature all five original members.
