Give It Away

All the interest comes from Flea's extraordinarily active bass line (spanning the full fretboard), Frusciante's percussive, muted guitar attack, and the rhythmic interplay between all four musicians. The A minor pentatonic foundation with blues-inflected bends gives the riff its aggressive, primal energy. The main riff and bassline for "Give It Away" were created by guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Flea during their time in H.A.T.E., a side project with members of Fishbone formed after the Chili Peppers' tour in support of Mother's Milk (1989). The rhythm was performed at several H.A.T.E. shows, but when that project disbanded, Frusciante and Flea felt the track would be a perfect fit for the Chili Peppers' next album. When vocalist Anthony Kiedis heard the rest of the band play the song, he immediately began chanting "give it away, give it away, give it away now" — a phrase he had been carrying in his notebook, waiting for the right musical context. The bridge section was completed through a creative process the band called "face-offs," where Flea and Frusciante each independently composed their own version, and the band reconvened later to choose the strongest contribution.

"Give It Away" is the explosive lead single from Red Hot Chili Peppers' landmark album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991).
