Mikky Ekko and Justin Parker wrote 'Stay' with Ekko originally intending to record it for himself. When Rihanna heard the track during the 'Unapologetic' sessions, she claimed it for the album, with Ekko retained as the featured vocalist — an arrangement that preserved the song's intimate, collaborative character.

Released in November 2012 as part of 'Unapologetic,' 'Stay' marked a tonal pivot for Rihanna — stripping away the club production that defined her catalog in favour of a naked, piano-driven meditation on emotional dependency.
