The song was born during Journey's 1979 US tour with Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy. While hanging out in Miami, Phil Lynott, Steve Perry, and Neal Schon shared rhyme scheme exercises together. The guitar-vocal interchange style that Lynott used with his guitarists — the rapid give-and-take between instrument and voice — directly inspired the structure of 'Any Way You Want It.' Perry and Schon then continued developing the song on the band's tour bus, with Schon on acoustic guitar and Perry singing vocals, refining the arrangement into the tight call-and-response format that defines the track.
