Open Arms

The harmony of "Open Arms" is deceptively simple but masterfully crafted. The descending bass line in the verse (D-C#-B) creates a sense of emotional vulnerability through stepwise contrary motion against sustained upper voices. The diatonic chord palette stays entirely within D major, lending the song warmth and accessibility. The use of slash chord inversions rather than root-position changes gives the progression a sophisticated, flowing quality that elevates it above typical power ballad fare.

Jonathan Cain began writing "Open Arms" while still a member of The Babys, but vocalist John Waite dismissed the melody as "sentimental rubbish." When Cain joined Journey, he brought the unfinished song to the writing sessions for the Escape album. He and Steve Perry completed it together, changing the key from A to D and reworking the melody. Despite the collaboration yielding a deeply emotive ballad, guitarist Neal Schon initially resisted the track, feeling it was too far removed from anything Journey had attempted before.

Co-written by Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain for Journey's blockbuster 1981 album Escape, "Open Arms" is a sweeping power ballad built on a descending bass line and Perry's unmistakable vocal passion. Despite nearly being left off the album, it peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was named by VH1 as the greatest power ballad of all time.
