The descending diatonic bass line gives it a natural sense of forward motion, while the major-key warmth prevents the vi chord from pulling toward melancholy. Its simplicity is its genius: the unchanging progression mirrors the song's lyrical promise of constancy, and it leaves all the dramatic tension to the vocal melody and arrangement dynamics. Prince himself recognized the universality of this progression when he called Jonathan Cain about 'Purple Rain' sharing the same four chords.

Jonathan Cain began writing the song on a tour bus headed to Saratoga Springs, New York, jotting the opening lyric 'highway run into the midnight sun' on a paper napkin. The next day he sat down at a backstage grand piano at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and completed the entire song in roughly half an hour. Cain described the experience as supernatural, saying he had never had a song come to him so quickly. The band performed it live for the first time at that same venue.

Written by keyboardist Jonathan Cain on a tour bus napkin and completed in just thirty minutes, "Faithfully" became one of Journey's most enduring anthems.
