Ramble On

The harmony of 'Ramble On' is deceptively simple on paper — mostly I, IV, and V in E major — but its genius lies in how those chords are deployed across radically different textures. The verse's bare I–V acoustic vamp evokes folk and Renaissance music, while the chorus's IV–V–I lands as pure hard rock. This dynamic harmonic recontextualization, what Dave Lewis called 'light and shade dynamism,' became a Led Zeppelin hallmark. "Ramble On" was co-written by guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant during Led Zeppelin's intensive 1969 touring and recording period. The lyrics, primarily penned by Plant, channel his love of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, weaving references to Mordor, Gollum, and Sauron into a narrative about restless travel and romantic longing. The opening line, 'Leaves are falling all around,' adapts a line from Tolkien's Quenya poem 'Namárië.'
